Tubes

Just got back from the ENT at Children's Hospital (Minneapolis). It looks like our little guy is going to need tubes after failing four hearing tests. No one has ever seen Ian's ear drums, his ear canals are too small. His ENT said he has never seen canals so small and may not even be able to put a tube in his left ear. I had my suspicions that Ian may need tubes because that seems to be the going trend in our Ds Group, but to actually find out that it's for sure that he does is hard. Our poor, sweet guy has had to endure so much suffering in his small life. It's not fair.

Joey has had that same problem from the beginning. Unfortunatly for him, even at 2 years old, his ear canals are still too small for tubes but the Dr can finally see his ear drums! It will get better, I promise!

Have they done an ABR?

Raising Joey- Thank you very much for your encouraging words.

Steve- If I'm right, the ABR is the test where they sedate him to see his brain activity in response to sounds? The doc did bring that up but decided tubes would be best. Any thoughts on that? Thanks for popping by.

Aaahhh tubes..and ABR hearing tests. Yes, I know them well. Not only because of Angela who has had 5 or 6 sets of tubes and I don't know how many ABR tests done, but also because of my work. As a sign language interpreter I often sat in with parents when ABR's were being done, etc. It depends upon the doctor, but most will do tubes first, then give them a couple months time before doing an ABR. Others will do the ABR at the time of tube surgery which is kind of silly since there is usually still a lot of fluid in there that will skew the brain response to sound.
Angela's ears were also extremely tiny. She had her first set of tubes custom made by our ENT in Minneapolis. Nobody had ever seen her ear drums when the first set was done at 6 or 7 months old. Somewhere on my blog is a detailed explanation of what to expect when tubes are done, or you're having an ABR done, along with an explanation of what those WORDS mean. LOL Oh...and for the tubes...you won't even have time to visit Ann at the coffee Kiosk! Honest, it takes longer to put the kids to sleep than it does to put the tubes in.

Leah-Thanks for writing and for your affirming words. It's comforting to know others have been through this before. So sorry to hear that Angela has had to do it so many times, I'm glad the tubes have helped her.
